Perhaps a good way to measure this is by portage snapshot downloads, but idk.
We're like 16 on distrowatch. |

Best would be to accumulate "emerge --sync" usage data across all of the mirrors. Determining distinct users could be hard, and there may be privacy issues though.
Another measure is the number of registered and active Gentoo forum users - by active, I mean over say a month, not concurrent users. OK, a lot of people using other distros read the forums 'cos they're such a good repository of sound technical info, but I suggest it's likely that most registered forum users will be Gentoo users. _________________ Greybeard |

I'm not sure there would be a good way at all to do it. many users may not ever have to visit the website at all. you dont even have to touch your machine to be a user. _________________ “Music is a moral law. I've been told that there are over 20 000 --sync's per day on the master rsync servers, should give you a small impression _________________ Please add "[solved]" to the initial topic title when it is solved. |

That mean 20,000 gentoo users are there who regularly sync their system. _________________ Iove linux |

No, it means there are about 20,000 gentoo-running computers who sync regularly. |

I've portage on NFS and four computers are using it. I guess it makes 20,003 then. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

From post id 20110510205612.GD3037 to gentoo-project mailing list
The inference is that users on the last page of the guide are installing, so those numbers are installs per day.
Now we need the average life of a Gentoo install.
My first install from mid 2002 using the 1.4-rc4 liveCD still works. Its not on the original hardware but its still the same install. A bit like grandfathers axe. _________________ Regards,

Really don't know what you mean with "average life" Neddy.
Install once, never reinstall.
Deletion or changing the OS doesn't come to mind, if you ever take the first rocks of installation and if you use it long enough to get familiar with this system.
Best regards to all Gentoo-Users.

Of the two Gentoo machines I maintain and emerge --sync, one does it only weekly, other does it every other day... Plus I sync my other machines off the one that syncs every other day to reduce bandwidth usage...
Should everyone sync daily from each machine separately so an accurate number is available? _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

So I would probably guess that the majority sync about once a week. So if there are 20,000 per day * 7 days = 140,000. But perhaps multiply that by two to account for those who sync monthly or longer out (maybe never) so 280,000 to 300,000 seems reasonable, no? Just an educated guess. |
