La scheda video è una ati radeon 9800pro
Non so più che fare per far girare X sulla Gentoo (sono alla prima installazione, quindi magari è colpa mia... ma ho veramente finito le idee)
Prima si piantava su questo errore

Eliminando il supporto framebuffer dal kernel e ricompilando ottengo questo (prima però si vede che X fa un tentativo di partire, si vede un pezzetto di schermo grigio)

Ti mancano le Athena Widgets. Ma non cpaisco come mai... hai fatto un installazione GRP o da sorgenti?

Si, ho emerso le librerie
Credo che ci sia qualche problema con X però, nfati ora partte ma lo schermo viene disegnato fuori dallo "schermo", diciamo che il 60% si vede il resto scompare in basso a sinistra, nemmeno provando coi comandi del monitor si riesce a rendere tutto visibile.
In più lo schermo segnala che la risoluzione attiva è "NESSUNA RISOLUZIONE".
Ho provato a modificare i paramentri dello schermo prendendo ddcxinfo-knoppix

Risolto anche questo, era una stupidagine.
i settaggi di X non vanno in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
ma in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Il tool dell'ati per configurare X però è sbagliato..... |

Hai provato ad andare con il mouse nella parte di schermo che non si vede? Se suppongo giusto dovrebbe muovere la zona visibile.
Se é così posta la sezione monitor del tuo Xorg.conf....

Adesso funziona.
La configurazione corretta del monitor lo presa come ho detto prima col comando
ddcxinfo-knoppix -monitor
Era laconfigurazione base di xorg.conf che dave errore
Una nota a chi volesse usare ddcxinfo-knoppix, questo fa il probe corretto di TUTTE le modalità dello schermo, mettendole tutte X potrebbe metterci davvero tanto a partire.
Io per esempio alla fine ho messo solo
