If you use firefox

Try to type

http://http://

in the address bar and press enter
You will be sent into a microsoft page

It will not work with internet explorer or wget

I have tried firefox ver. 1.0pre1 and ver. 1.0

you can also type http://http://<text of your choice>

Umm.. no.
It will remove the colon and then try to resolve http, since http isn't a tld it simply fails.
Perhaps you're using a microsoft proxy?

Ich will check with live http headers where that comes from and report back.

I suppose it's becouse firefox (as standard) does a "I feel lucky"-search on google if the domain isn't valid.
Check out who's number one on that list:

Code:
http://http://

is equal to going to google and typing "http://" and then pressing "I'm feeling lucky", much like all those things you type solo in the address bar.

You just probably have german locale set in Windows, but not in Gentoo. Google.com just redirects you to google.de based on your locale.
