no matter what chinese locale you are using, as long as this forum is encoded in UTF-8, your web browser will only post utf-8 encoded chinese characters to this forum |

There're gentoo users from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and many other Chinese all around the world, we all use Chinese (no matter simplified or traditional), so it would be much better to have only one forum named "Chinese". Then all of us could help each other and share our gentoo experience, happiness with all those friends who use Chinese in the world. |
Actually most internet savvy Singaporeans use English. But with a population of roughly 4 million and probably not even 1% linux users, Singapore doesnt really count for much. Just China is enough.
But I am for the idea since I can read it! Simplified only please, I cant read traditional chinese at all. _________________ blog | homepage | alias | prompts |

If we set up a chinese forum we'd also need some chinese speaking moderators.
As a moderator you should:
1.) have enough spare time left to moderate the forum constantly
2.) know Gentoo very well (so that you are able to help out other people)
Any volunteers? _________________ "To have a successful open source project, you need to be at least somewhat successful at getting along with people." -- Daniel Robbins |

I wish some chinese guys who have good experience in gentoo and enough spare time to fill this position sooner.
We have forwarded this thread in a chinese linux-gentoo forum. I think there are many guys to apply for this position soon.
Sorry, I have no enough time in the next year unfortunately. It is too bad for me. |

Hi,
1.) I currently have enough spare time, I can spend 1~2 hours here every day, and I have experience of being a moderator (poetry board though ) of one of the biggest BBSs of China universities. However, things might change in mid Dec, if I get a job then (currently unemployed), time might be a problem.
2.) I dare not to say I "know gentoo very well", I've been using linux for more than two years. However, I've been using gentoo for several months (my box is gentoo only, from stage1 ). I do know something about gentoo, and I've been always thinking about helping other people with my linux experience (and I'm doing it, one of the biggest things I've ever done is translated the whole gentoo handbook to Simplified Chinese version)
Well, count me as a candidate if you think I'm appropriate _________________ - http://nkbit.com

E.g.:
- Move, close, split, delete and edit threads when appropriate.
- Alert the Admin/s to inappropriate posts and/or members who chronically break the rules.
- Make sure everybody keeps playing nice.
- A moderator has the power to make threads sticky and create announcements.

|
|
Hi, all,
I am writing for apply the vacancy of the coming Gentoo Chinese Forum
This is Akar Chen, live in Hong Kong SAR. i have once installed Gentoo 1.4 about two years ago. But i stop using Gentoo and swtich to another Distro "Magic Linux" by China Community, after i found there is poor support for a Chinese Desktop Environment at that time.
Now i have Chinese Gentoo DE installed both in office and home, i use GNU/Debian as well. I am definately not a guy with master skills. But i am using both two Chinese portage tress, thanks to them all, now i have a lovely Chinese Gentoo Desktop Environment.
I am seeing Chinese Users/Chinese DE are benifiting from Gentoo's advance package management the "Portage":
I . Gentoo's Portage system encourages "second development" for better Chinese support.
2. Gentoo's Portage system encourages distributed workforces collaboration.
Currently, we have two Chinese port_overlays for Gentoo, the GCL( http://gentoo.linuxsir.com ) and GOT (http://www.gentoo.org.tw ). I use both of them, because i and most of the HKers are need to use both two Chinese encoding systems.
If i am selected to be the moderator of the new Gentoo Chinese Forum. I will try my best to hold the forum, providing a best place for the best support to the normal Chinese users and the programmers, too.
I will see if there are chances that two seperated Chinese portage trees can be consolidated to become one.
I will see if there are chances for upstream the Chinese patch to the source application, as the result of the patch is well discussed and widely used among the users.
best regards
Akar

1. It is an ideal way to patch and testing the Chinese DE base on Gentoo, usually Gentoo user can have the most breading-age Chinese DE solution. And more than that, it allows the patches to easily share among the programmers. Distributed workforces are encoughed.
2. With the advancement of point 1, may here we can have the application developers discuss on Chinese handling issues with the native Chinese programmers as well as the dialy users like me.(see the patches and discuss them)
3. Currently, we have two Chinese port_overlays for Gentoo, the GCL( http://gentoo.linuxsir.com ) and GOT (http://www.gentoo.org.tw ). I use both of them, because i and most of the HKers are need to use both two Chinese encoding systems.

THIS is what i like bout gentoo, not only do you guys have ample support in the emerge filez, you also have very ample international support. I applaud that cuz, it is very important for the propagation of linux for international support.
Myself living in Colombia right now, i am actually seeing the disadvantage ppl have when they don't have support in their native language. It doesn't surprise me that ppl are afraid to use linux cuz its different, especially here, cuz of lack of documentation. But with support forums being in all possible languages, this is great. Thats why i voted yes |
