I'm having a rather fun time trying to get this video card to work without using commercial drivers (I've purchased Accel-X Platinum for this thing in the mean time.. its closed source, annoying, and works - sort of). Anyways, the only drivers that I can find are closed source ATI drivers. They're requirements list GLibc 2.2 ..

how do I get glibc2.2 onto my system when its using newer glibc's and whatnot?

So I found my answer...

A combination of Kernel 2.4.20 and Xfree 4.2.1 works great!

After emerging the latest xfree, and setting up kernel 2.4.20 with agpgart support and the ATI radeon DRM driver, I was able to run "xf86cfg", save off the minimal config, then
modify it with:

DefaultDepth 24

and removing the rest of the bit depths in the config, other than 24.

Just thought folks would like to know this on the newer ATI cards :-)

(I haven't tested 3D support with this yet.. I don't really need it.. I wanted stable and fast X, which I now have)

I'm gonna try this out.
Previously I X running on this laptop with the slow framebuffer driver.
Now I'm re-installing linux on this machine and hopefully gonna get faster X thanks to you :)

btw, using 1600x1200x32 framebuffer console on this too :) this is an excellent piece of hardware

works absolutely fantastic

i'd like to note:

by adding this to the XF86Config file i got also excellent 3D performance :)
Code:

Section "DRI"
   Group "video"
   Mode    0666
EndSection
