allora provo a essere il piu chiaro possibile
Problema 1) Se dal mio account "franz" provo a fare "new login in a nested window" per avere una sessione "root" di X ... la finestra si apre con il login ... metto "root" e la password ... e gnome inizia solamente a caricarsi (non vedo neppure la splash ... dopodiche mi dice:

Inutile dire ... che lo spazio libero dei fari filesystems è ben lungi dall'essere finito. Quando poi do l'OK si chiude tutto.
Problema 2) Quando faccio il Logout da una sessione di gnome e poi spengo ... invece della schermata in cui stoppa i programmi e smonta i Filesystems ... vedo lo schermo grigio ... e quindi non posso vedere eventuali errori.
Problema 3) Dopo l'aggiornamento di Xorg alla 6.8r3 ... alla fine dello shutdown ... mi scrive power-off ma non mi spegne il pc -... lo devo fare a mano

Risolti i problemi 2 e 3 ... era un problema di kernel.
Rimane il probl 1 ... davvero antipatico |

so che l'ultimo sys-libs/pam stable ha creato parecchi problemi, e ci sono diversi bug report aperti (a me ad esempio X nested non funzionava più del tutto)
potresti cercare su bugzilla e nel frattempo provare a commentare le righe REMOTEHOST, DISPLAY e XAUTHORITY in /etc/security/pam_env.conf (non so se serve il riavvio dopo)
