Posted: Wed Nov 17, 2004 3:57 am Post subject: Adaptec 29160 and cd burning with aic7xxx |
|
|
I am a long time Gentoo user with a SCSI only system with a Adaptec 29160 controller card, an IBM scsi harddrive and a Plextor PX-W1210S CD burner. I have the aic7xxx driver compiled into the kernel
I was running a 2.4 kernel before (not sure which version) and have never had a problem with this combo.
I did a complete re-install two or three weeks ago to upgrade to 2.6.7, and can't for the life of me get CD burning working again. I can use the drive without problems, mount cdrom's and play audio discs.
I am not using 2.6.8, which introduced the security issue about having to burn cd's as root. So that is not the problem.
I have tried different versions of cdrecord, and I couldn't get any of them to work. cdrdao does not work either, and that leads me to think that the problem is not with cdrecord, but rather with the underlying aic7xxx driver and my hardware.
I emerged and tried the gentoo-sources 2.4.26-r9 and the vanilla-sources 2.4.27. But it made no difference, cd burning still didn't burn.
I have tried all thes kernels:
linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r9
linux-2.4.27
linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r11
linux-2.6.9
linux-2.6.9-gentoo-r1
All with the aic7xxx driver compiled into the kernel. I have tried both the new and old version of the driver.
I have perused these forums for days, seeking an answer to my problem, to no avail.Thought there are many cd burning issues none resolved my issue.
At some point I was doubting my hardware, so I took it out and plugged it into my wife's windows 98 box. To add insult to injury it worked fine.
If anybody can shed some light I will be extremely grateful.
Here is a printout of my complete dmesg:

I couldn't update my gentoo-sources from 2.6.13-r5 to 2.6.14-r2 because of a similiar problem.
Well, never had this kind of problem, maybe the developers applied a wrong patch... I don't know
As my root is the scsi disk attached to Adaptec 29160, I can't even boot.
So I'm just using 2.6.13-r5, waiting for another kernel update.

thank you lost+found for your comment.
At least, now I know that the bug is present.
I'm NOT the one causing the trouble |

FYI:
the same problems exists with an AHA 2940 UW (aix7xxx Version V.7).
Affected are all kernel-versions newer than 2.6.13.4 (vanilla), which you already know.
I have a scsi-only-system (uhoh.. the abbreviation of this is S-O-S. Holy sh..) and it generally stopped working when putting a media into the cd or dvd under kernel 2.6.15(vanilla+gentoo)/16(vanilla)/17rc2(vanilla).
Randomly it generates the known errors for the hdds or a kernel-panic occured, but this was very rare.
Like hamletmun I'm glad that it's not my fault.
