I'm having an odd error that I have never seen before when installing on either AMD 64 or regular AMD x86's. I emerged gnome and went to start up hald but I am getting the error:
*CONFIG_HOTPLUG not enabled for this kernel!

I am running the 2.6.11-gentoo-r7 kernel with the .config of:
CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_FAKE=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI_IBM=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI_ZT5550=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI_GENERIC=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_SHPC=m
# CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_SHPC_POLL_EVENT_MODE is not set

Is there anyway to fix this so that hald starts?

I've got the same problem, and I'm running Gentoo on my apple iBook, so I guess this isn't a platform related problem.

I think you need to do this:
Code:
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=y

and enable relevant ACPI modules such as:
Code:
CONFIG_ACPI=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT=y
CONFIG_ACPI_INTERPRETER=y
CONFIG_ACPI_AC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BATTERY=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON=y
CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO=m
# CONFIG_ACPI_HOTKEY is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_FAN=y
CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y
CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_ASUS is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_IBM is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_TOSHIBA is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BLACKLIST_YEAR=0
# CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BUS=y
CONFIG_ACPI_EC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_POWER=y
CONFIG_ACPI_PCI=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_CONTAINER is not set

I'm running Linux on a ppc iBook machine, and acpi isn't supported. And yet hal has the ppc keyword, which should mean that it would work nicely without acpi. So I guess that that couln't be the solution, right?
