When I make alterations to /proc/ide/hd#/settings via hdparm (or just echo >'ing to the ./settings file, either way) The settings aren't saved when I reboot, and my throughput drops to slow-as-all-hell like it was before. I read this is normal, but I don't know how to enable these settings on startup. I already compiled support to enable DMA in the kernel on IDE devices, but that doesn't actually work for me. Any ideas?

try editing /etc/init.d/hdparm. :-) or putting it in /etc/conf.d/local.start

lol.. sorry guys. Somehow I managed to make it work right after I posted. I added support for my IDE chipset in the kernel (I didn't see it the first time) and it worked.
