Der Standard (eine der besseren - wenn nicht die beste Zeitung - Österreichs) hat Gentoo eine "Ansichtssache" spendiert: http://derstandard.at/?id=1003688
Der Standard ( one of the better - maybe the best - austrian newspaper) made a gentoo re-"view": http://derstandard.at/?id=1003688 (german)
As expected, only the installation process ("not for newbies" ) is mentioned as weakness - anything else is being praised

due to the dynamic frameset construct of http://derstandard.at babelfish doesn't work
but praise can easily be read in any language and at least 25% of the words are (nearly) english anyway

You can always simply cut and paste the article into the fish. That worked fine for me.
I always get a kick out of seeing babelfish's "creative" translations...

HEy, it is at least good enough to understand everything. though translating "MB" to "MT" is not very obvious Okay, here's the fun for all:
Quote: |
Linux distributions gives it zahreiche - Distrowatch nevertheless lists 88 of it - and every few weeks is added a new. Nothing far unusual thus, when at the end of was presented March the version 1.0 of Gentoo Linux of the public. But fast it was clear that Gentoo is not simply a further Linux distribution. Within only two weeks it created Gentoo under the Top 10 of the most popular Linux distributions on Distrowatch - the user and developer basis grow since then with due speed. Then or other weaving and pool of broadcasting corporations editor could naturally also not extract itself from the whole Rummel, which had to almost already entail the following test report.
The current - stable - version 1.2 enclosure by Gentoo Linux, which can be downloaded as ISO file of the side of the developers, was tested the smallest variant thereby only 16 MT and is thus - straight compared with other distributions - quite fast at the domestic computer. This therefore agitates that Gentoo pursues another concept than the well-known "large" Linux distributions: There is here no before-configured system that simply only more is copied on the non removable disk, that/those UserIn again develops Gentoo of reason. The necessary software is loaded if necessary from the InterNet and compiled afterwards from the Sourcen, which optimiertete particularly for the own computer and results in thus faster programs
But we begin once with an installation of the system. Here shows up directly that Gentoo is not necessarily addressed to beginners, a simple graphic installation gives it - still - not. However there is a very good installation Guide, which describes the necessary steps in detail. By that CD gebootet must first times the necessary drivers be loaded and a few fundamentally attitudes - particularly for the InterNet connection - be made, afterwards the part follows that most user inside headaches probably prepares becomes: The Partitionierung by means of fdisk. Whom this is too complicated, this can naturally already before with a comfortable graphic Tool such as Diskdrake or partition Magic make.
Then the decision follows, how fundamentally the system is again compiled. Gentoo offers CD here 3 to different stages on that. While in the smallest variant even the C-compiler is again produced, the stage 3 shortens the time to the finished Gentoo Linux nevertheless substantially, since it contains a basic system already compiled. For user inside, which want really the last Quentchen speed from its computer out-hollow, the answer can naturally only be everything of reason on to construct, therefore the slogan of the following daily is called: Patience. Because sowas its time needs, depending upon processor speed several hours.
Afterwards still the selection and mechanism of its own follow Kernels, which contains also quite nice extras with Gentoo like special - official not yet - Patches, which improve the performance of the system. Still a few further configuration steps and after a Reboot that/those lands UserIn for the first time in the new Gentoo Linux system. Here one of the large strengths of the Gentoo Herangehsweise shows up equal: The boat time is contrary to usual Linux distributions around some more briefly, even with a fully equipped system, including Web -, ftp, SSH and other services the boat time amounts to only into approximately half to a third (!) of the time, which Mainstream Linux distributions need such as SuSE or Mandrake.
This circumstance has above all two reasons: On the one hand really only the services are installed and really needed started, those that/those for UserIn, on the other hand one the Kernel is by far not in such a way overloaded, as with other distributions, whose Linux core contains drivers for all possible and impossible hardware, which are never needed on the own system.
As a command line is of course times which nice, most user inside becomes it however nevertheless to prefer further software - as one the numerous Window Manger from flux box to KDE and gnomes - to install. And here one of the further large strengths of Gentoo comes into the play: The package management system Portage that the much-praised haven system of FreeBSD follows, and compared with which prevailing RPM system long series of advantages offers. The installation of a certain software goes perfectly uncomplicatedly of. A simple ' emerge gnomes ' compiled for example entire GNOMES the 2-Desktop, around all necessary dependence worries Portage, then a x-server not installed possibly yet is installed in addition, with ' emerge p of gnomes ' can alike be indicated in the Vorhinein, which packages will be this.
Now the inevitable question, how up-to-date such a new Gentoo system is, follows the answer is simple: As up-to-date as only at all possible. Since the descriptions of the packages are loaded from the InterNet and not from CD to come, always the most current so-called provided by developers become "ebuilds" used. Also later updating of the system runs simply: By means of ' emerge rsync ' are loaded the descriptions of the installable packages on the domestic computer, a following ' emerge -- update world ' compiles the updated packages. Meanwhile it gives for the command-lineputrid user inside also a graphic Tool that all takes over these tasks of maintenance.
The result can be seized into a word together: Enthusiasm. Not only the fact that it really makes fun - and is extremely instructive - its own Linux of reason on to construct, which can itself let result see real: The boat time is ungeschlagen fast, the performance noticeably better than with other distributions. And this projection/lead becomes already soon still larger, if the version 1.4 of Gentoo, which is based on the new compiler generation GCC 3,1, will appear, since with these also specific optimizations for Pentium are possible 4 and Athlon XP. For beginners Gentoo is been suitable, too many attitudes must haendisch be made, too complicated is not really the installation. For experienced Linux UserInnen however, which want a really optimized and constantly current system, almost is Gentoo must. |
Well, on the one hand this article is quite funny (in english ), but since "DerStandard" is an ordinary (not meaning tabloid) daily newspaper, such a report shows the meaning of gentoo
And I'm really surprised, how good the fish has become

It's gotten better, yes, but it still has a way to go.
