Xorg vs. XFree

Hi, I just came back from a long period of time where I didn't touch my computer much ( months ) and in which I haven't followed linux news.

Before this period I was eagerly looking at XFree alternatives like XOrg that seemed to be coming up nicely. At the time it the first release of Fedora came out with XOrg but at the time this X Server wasn't really used much and seemed still in under heavy devlopment.

Fast foward a couple of months ...

Now it seems everyone and there mother on the Gentoo boards are using XOrg. What's the state of XOrg's X Server ? Is it widely used ? What about other distro's ? Is it ready for mass comsumption ? Better than XFree or just XFree without some licensing issues ?, etc ?

I looked at their web site but it's not pretty explicit.

FWIW, with the latest xfree and a ati mobility rage (mach64)
card; no dri, glxgears = about 150 fps

with xorg 6.7 (6.8 won't work with ati!!), no dri,
glxgears = about 50 fps

Ok this anwser's my question, I have a ATI radeon card. I knew that when it was first released they had troubles with ATI cards but if it's still the case I will stick with XFree.

It all depends on what cards and what release you are using. I had no problems with Xorg 6.7, but I was not an early adaptor of that. (I decided that I did not want the pains of dealing with that mess.) The binary drivers work fine for that release.

Also, if you have a Radeon 9200 or less then you can use Xorg 6.8 for DRI and everything just fine. My 8500 gets 2700 FPS in glxgears (default size).
