I've recently decided to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel on my Ultra 2 and I've run into a strange problem. I configured the 2.6.7 kernel to fit my system and the system boots up entirely, all the way to the login prompt, but the keyboard (a type 6) does not work at all. So I can't log in locally, however, I can ssh in and do whatever I want for a while, although eventually the system locks up for no apparent reason and I need to powercycle it. Also, although ssh works, nothing else does, Apache is running but refuses all connections, and the same goes for smb and nfs. Ssh works fine, but all other services refuse all connections. Also, when I switch back to a 2.4 kernel everything works just fine again. After browsing the forums for the past few days I have not found anything similar to my problem, so if anyone has any ideas as to what it is please let me know.

My config is here.

Thanks,
TIM

In your /etc/rc.conf file, did you remember to change from
KEYMAP="sunkeymap" to
Code:

KEYMAP="us"

That could explain your first problem.
The second problem (lockup requiring a power cycle) sounds like a known kernel problem which is the reason
kernel-2.6.xx is not considered very stable on sparc right now, at least by some of us.

I did not have that, but that still did not fix the problem.
I fixed rc.conf and still the same thing.
It boots up, no keyboard.
ssh works, nothing else does.
it freezes solid after about 3 minutes.

My keyboard works, just dont give the right keys! ;-)
The codes are all wrong but works 100% under 2.4.*.
Right now I run ssh to the machine but it would be nice to be able to login localy incase of network problems.

My keyboard is:
"KEYMAP="sunt5-fi-latin1""

Also the mouse is dead but I dont use it so I havent looked into it.

Everything else look 100%

One thing that has me a bit confused though:
"
billy linux # hdparm -d /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
using_dma = 1 (on)
"
I though only PIO was supported on these boxes (Ultra 5). Guess I will have to look in the code and see if there are any new coments.

[EDIT, add]
After looking through the forums I found this URL "http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/docs/sparc-2.6.x/#keymaps"
The keymaps for sun have been changed to use x86 maps in 2.6.*. So now I have to pick if I want a working keyb in 2.4 or 2.6...

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=149437 might explain your mouse problem.

I've now fixed it with a USB one.

For the lockup problem, make sure you install the right keyboard (i.e. Sun Type 5/6 keyboard) inside the kernel, not as modules. AND don't install other keyboards (such as PC Keyboard, which is installed by default). I also had the same problem initially, but this solved my situation. Hope it will solve yours.
