I've figured that my onboard sound is crap.

Is there a sound card(s) that is easy to install?

Also, are there going to be updated instructions
for the Alsa 0.9.x build that is emerged now?

I've always had good luck with my SB Live! cards that use the emu10k1 chip.

I tried the onboard ac97 for about a week then bought a cheap sb live 5.1... 25 pounds... i think it is even possible to get the digital out working. I have not looked back, the ALSA drivers are great, esp the new 0.9.

Just don't put any ALSA related items in the modules.autoload.

Another vote for the SB Live!

I had some fight with my onboard card an ALSA drivers (via /etc/moduls.conf).

Then I realized it is SoundBlaster compatible. I switch to OSS.
You just simply type:
#modprobe sb
and SoundBlaster driver is forced to load (even if I had no SB card). And it works.

To automate the module loading, put this line to /etc/profile

Sound Blaster PCI 512. It uses the emu10k1 chipset too, but is $50 retail here, compared to $70 for the next cheapest emu10k1 card. It has 16 MB of onboard RAM compared to 32 MB on the Live! series, and it lacks some other weird stuff, but it's a good card -- I've installed two on Gentoo systems so far with no problems.

I'm quite happy with it. (And my Altec Lansing speakers... drool. But that's a different thread. :-P)
