|
|
I'm about to purchase a newer CPU... going from 1.4 Athlon-tbird to possibly a Athlon-XP 2100.
Question: Am I screwed? My Gentoo system is finally the way I live it. It's been compiled for Athlon-tbird (march=athlon-tbird). If I drop in a Athlon-XP will the system boot, or will I need to recompile everything from scratch with (march=athlon-xp)?
I know I could have used other flags (mcpu=athlon-tbird), but I'm just thinking about upgrading at this point...
Thanks,
Erik |

I'm not an expert at this, but no I believe amd's processor are backward compatible. So yes, your system will boot.

It'll work without any changes. You can even change your use flags into athlon-xp and continue emerging new packages using that.
I did the same, and had zero problems. |

Yep I have to second (or third or...) that!
I could just replace my duron with a palomino XP 1600.
I even changed motherboard from via-based to sis-based an I only had to rebuild a kernel to get my harddisc going on DMA. It did work with the original kernel , but with slightly slow hd performance.
Try that with "the competition" |

I upgraded from my PII-450 with a 440-BX motherboard to a KT133A motherboard and a AMD Duron 1200 processor and the system booted.
Only problem I experienced was that i didn't have support for the onboard IDE-controller to work 100% properly but that was fixed with a recompiled kernel with support for VIA chipsets.
Next step for me is to move my running installation to my new raid and reconfigure /etc/make.conf and /etc/make.globals, /etc/lilo.conf to fit my new system and do an 'emerge system' and 'emerge world' and i think i should be on my way. |
