dev-lang/php should be compiled with the session use flag. Cacti requires PHP session support.

I had emerged cacti after emerging dev-lang/php-5.0.5-r5, and Cacti was returning the error "Call to undefined function: session_start()".

"emerge -pv dev-lang/php" returned the session use flag with an asterisk "+session*", which indicated that php was compiled without session support.

After re-emerging php and restarting apache, Cacti started working!

Same here. All the required apps updated as of today using ~amd64 packages.
