Do Gentoo'ers do anything with their gentoo box other than recurse through interminable iterations of emerge rsync -up system -up world emerge [fill in blank] followed by long periods of dithering and strumming as the compile scribble and scratch scrolls off the screen?
If so, then please describe what productive work your gentoo box does -- is it corporate web, email, file, print server? |

I use Gentoo as my home desktop. Which means I:
surf
email
write reports
play games
play music
play dvds
occasionally do "real work" using Matlab and octave
write the occasional line of code
chat
etc,etc |

While the "dithering and strumming as the compile scribble and scratch scrolls off the screen" is happening in a terminal window I usually work on my own little pet projects, surf the web, post to newsgroups, play games, watch movies, etc. Same as most people do with their home workstations I would guess. |

- web, irc, mail and anything else on the net
- playing dvds, divx, audio-cd and burning cdroms...
- making original artwork or customizing with gimp
- the rare office document
- doing some real work (statistics with R, a bit of scilab)
- a few games when I'm bored to death _________________ Need to flame people LIVE on IRC? Join #gentoo-otw on freenode! |

Gentoo is my desktop system and main OS. If it weren'T for my sister I'd get rid of windows completely. I use gentoo for:
writing documents
calculation
irc
web
email
games
and soon: Development
I also use gentoo for:
blaming someone/something if anything goes wrong (I'll find something that doesn't work as I want to, easily )
And even sex.
...
Okay - I admit, the last one was just kidding. |

But seriously, my pure Gentoo box, my main desktop (and the only computer I have in a usable state right now) is used for the same things others are using: SETI@home , browsing, e-mail, IM, IRC, P2P (OpenFT r00lz), occasional development or graphics work, and so on. When I built this box I got a GeForce adn other goodies with the intention of gaming - and stuff works, although sometimes I have to use Wine - but I've found mucking around with Gentoo so much fun that I haven't done any in a long time - with the exception of short rounds of gltron. _________________ Man must shape his tools lest they shape him. |

- surfing
- mailing
- ut2003 (but i'm far too slow for it )

what a normal desktop user does with his computer:
-listen to music
-surf the web
-chat on irc
-check news servers
-mail a bit
-play some (the very few) native linux games
That's about it I think, well that and programming... but that isn't something every desktop user does. I haven't emerge rsync etc in a few months, haven't ever "emerge -u world". My box is stable as it is, if there's an update for an app that's a bit buggy I emerge or if there's a security update... but more than that... not really

In addition to surfing, email and the other typical stuff I mainly use it for web development (LAMP style) and for learning how to configure a better Linux system. |

Like others have said, I use it for normal desktop stuff. I run gentoo on all my systems so I have gentoo desktop boxes and gentoo server boxes. I also do the development thing on my desktop gentoo. |

You just reminded me of something I hadn't done yet today
No, seriously, updating is done whenever it is necessary. The rest of the time (99.9%) my systems are used for the regular server and destop stuff, i.e. surfing, mailing, programming, latexing/word processing, file serving, printing , what ever else comes to my mind, and with one or two rounds of tuxracer in between |

I use it in my dorm room as a server. I have it running my website and hosting files for people. It runs apache, mysql, pure-ftpd, tinydns, etc. No X on it. _________________ so crucify the ego before it's far too late

Work!
I use Gentoo exclusively at work. This of course includes mail, web, irc, aim (irc and aim are tools we us in work, have internal servers we connect to).
Several Java based applications
Several browser based applications (Oracle Apps)
Database programmin (Oracle - PL/SQL)
Database testcases
C-programming (database programming, yeah well, )
At home, everything above (Using VPN to connect to work)
+ news and some other special apps.

Until something wacky happenned to the hardware, I was using Gentoo for showing off the cats from the cat shelter I volunteer for. (cat shows, charity events, etc...)
Haven't had time to look into it.
The other machines at home will be converted to Gentoo in the not so distant future. _________________ -mark |

On my main box, I use Gentoo mainly for surfing the web, checking email, getting work done and gaming. Of course I also use to admin my other boxes via ssh.
My other boxes:
1. Acts as a firewall
2. Acts as an NFS/SAMBA server mostly for backups. I keep a backup of all my important stuff there. my /home gets backed up to it once a day. My roommate uses a windows box and I let him backup his stuff to it via samba.
3. A web/Mail server. Internal only. Mostly I use it to play around with PHP, and XML coding, and I check to see how it looks on my main box.... More for learning than anything else. _________________ Boricua Hasta La Muerte |
