Until recently, UT2004 was running extremely well. Now, all the sudden, all of the servers are laggy as hell. Like i mean super laggy. I don't know what happened or if this is related to GameSpy (crap) or my ISP. I still get 300-400 kb/s downlaod speeds so i don't know what's going on with UT. I was just wondering if anybody eles has experienced the same problem? I did a fresh reinstall of UT2004 and i'm about to redo my 32bit partition to see if a fresh Gentoo install would help. I'm guessing it won't. Again, anybody have a clue what's going on with UT?

hi Phorem

I am absolutly new to gentoo, but I play lots of ut on a windows-maschine and experienced a lot of Problems.

Do u know that online-servers often run Anti-TCC wich is a cheatprotection and causes lags in the first 1-3min when u join the Server?
I also know some peeps with Problems related to ut-comp. Did u try a non-ut-comp-server? If not, join a ctf-server to test it (most of em are without ut-comp).

Did u check the net-stat?
In win-ut it´s default-binded to F6. To manualy bind it I ad "F6=Stat Net" to the user.ini. There must be a user.ini or a counter part with analogue name in your UT2004/System-Folder (at least I hope so)
Have a look at Ping and Packetloss (and maybe In/Outgoing Packets - but afaik that mainly depends on the tickrate of the server u are connected to).

U should also exclude its a frame issue. U can see the FPS when u type "stat fps" to the ingame-console. Frames are maximum ~85 and shouldnt be <40 (imho) for decent performance.

If its a Ping/Packetloss-Problem its probably ISP- or Network-related.

If its a frame issue, it could be caused by gentoo. I was often told that ut runs with less fps on a linux-system cause its optimized to DX instead of OpenGL. But with your System it should run well with Linux.

If its neither frame/net-Problem it could be caused by some strange ut-settings (but reinstall schould have fixed it^^)
Maybe ask at http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=258.

Hope this is helpfull, although I never played ut on a linux-maschine.
