Hi,

I did an

Code:
emerge --update world

yesterday after happily using gnome2 for some time, to try and bring my system up to date. Now, when I use a gnome session from gdm, I just get the gnome splash screen and nothing - no icons on it, no movement to the desktop. I have checked .gnomerc-errors and it says

Quote:
gnome-smproxy: unable to connect to session manager

I checked other posts on this forum and made sure my /etc/fonts/fonts.conf included all the folders in /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts, and ran fc-cache to make sure, but to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? What broke when I did the emerge?

cheers
Richard

PS. I have also noticed that whenever I do an emerge rsync I get a package called gnome-2.0.3 which stops emerge --update world from working (all dependencies have been masked by it). When I remove /usr/portage/distfiles/gnome/gnome-2.0.3 it goes away. Is this related?

to solve your first problem, try using xfree 4.2.1-r1, that fixed this problem for me pretty quick.
As for the second problem, the update failing on gnome2.0.3, this has been fixed as of a few days ago, and if you emerge sync now and then try to emerge gnome, it will update you to 2.0.3 without having to unmask anything. I had this problem as well and noted that 2.0.3 emerged fine on the evening of December 1, 2002.

I would try updating to 2.0.3 before updating xfree.
Also, doing an emerge -u world it not all that it is cracked up to be, and many will tell you to avoid it at all costs ;) if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have the exact same problem. Are you running a firewall (iptables)? When I disable my firewall, Gnome starts just fine. Obviously, this is not a permanent solution. Does anyone have more information on 'gnome-smproxy'?

I don't have any info about the smproxy, but I was not running any firewall that I know of when I had the problem. Interesting...

I did an emerge rsync and emerge --update world last night (Tues 3rd Dec) and all was fixed. It appears that the packages on portage were temporarily inconsistent/broken for a few days?

That happens some times, mainly when new stuff is just coming out. Thats what bugs.gentoo.org is for ;)

this problem happened to me too. i rebooted and then it ran fine. i think it might have been a problem with various old gnome daemons (gconfd? proxy?) still running after doing an upgrade.
