Emacs in Text Mode

I told a mate I wanted to use emacs and he sent me to www.philscorner.org, if you look at the screenshots on his page everything is in text mode. How would I emerge emacs without useing the x bits?

He seems to be using Gentoo too by the way.

Having USE="-X -motif" in make.conf should do it for either XEmacs or FSF Emacs. Note that if you want X support, but don't want to use it from time to time, you can (for xemacs at least), use the "-nw" option.
