I'm using gdm. When I login as root I have no problems at all.

However, after creating a user and setting it's password and creating it's home folder (using various methods), including the kde GUI method. I find I cannot login to the machine as that user through the graphical interface.

GDM appears to crash and respawn on display :1, and then crashes again and respawns on display :2 :?

I'm pretty much running a standard X configuration, with the accelerated nvidia drivers loaded and working fine (when logged in as root)

Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Have to say other than that this distribution really rocks!

Erm, wrong permissions in /home/<user> or /tmp or /var/tmp or /var/lib/gdm?

Permissions:
Code:

drwx------ <user> <group> /home/<user>
drwxrwxrwt root   root   /tmp
drwxrwxrwx root   root   /var/tmp

/home/giles:

drwxr-xr-x 3 giles root 160 2002-12-01 13:42 giles

/var/lib/gdm:

drwxr-x--- 2 gdm gdm 496 2002-12-01 13:36 gdm

/tmp :

drwxrwxrwt 13 root root 784 2002-12-01 13:41 tmp

/var/tmp :

drwxrwxrwt 3 root root 96 2002-11-25 04:41 tmp

I presume that as gdm owns and has control of /var/lib/gdm then that is enough?

This is really getting to me, I know all about the dangers of running as root all the time 8O

The problem was actually related to an entry in my

/etc/security/console.perms

I had previously removed a <dri> entry, but had not removed the

<xconsole> 0600 <dri> 0600 root

entry... and it was failing on parsing that as <dri> is no longer defined.

Thanks for the help though. And stupid me :!:
