My home has a mini telephone exchange, so I was wondering whether it is possible to set up my computer as a dial up server? I have ethernet on the upper floor only, I really want to access the network from the lower floors.

I can live with a 56K connection a 100Mbps LAN, can't I?

Just to clarify, I want ISP style PPP, not old style telnet.

30 seconds on Google produced:

Bear in mind that you won't get 56k as analogue modems are asynchronious. They are only 32Kbps upstream, therefore, that's all you'll get. Other than that, you'll be running your own little ISP.

Good luck.

Thanks.

Now I'm left to wonder which getty to use. I only have agetty, so that's an obvious choice. Or should I listen and install mgetty?

I'm confused more than ever.

ok, i didn't read th elink but i just used:
Code:
emerge ppp pppconfig
used pppconfig to make the scripts i need with defaultroute, dial on demand and finished. with a
Code:
pppd call [providername]
([providername]the name you gave first to pppconfig) you start this dial on demand. this works for me. don't forget to insert the nameserver ip into the /etc/resolv.conf of your clients - or as nameserver for the m$ boxes. thats all.
at the time i try to enhace a bit by running bind and squit, but it's not necessary

hmm sounds like a catch 22 to me -- you need to emerge something (requiring downloads) to be able to dial-up to the internet. You need to have the internet to emerge something. An endless circle!
