Serial Console

Is there a way to make Gentoo use COM1 (ttyS/0) as its initial console, so I can connect a null modem cable to the pc and boot it, and see the kernelmessages, bootmessages etc., and login on it, so I can connect it in case something goes wrong.
How can I do this?
