PostPosted: Mon Aug 21, 2006 9:59 pm    Post subject: wine 0.9.19 and the WoW Trial Client Reply with quote

Hi,

I have installed the Warcraft Trial Client, and am trying to run it using Wine 0.9.19 with the winex11.drv/libopengl32 patch provided on this list. However, since this is not the client from the commerial CDs, I am not sure what the "correct" behaviour is. (I do not own Windows.)

This is my Config.wtf:
SET movie "0"
SET gxApi "direct3d"
SET gxColorBits "24"
SET gxDepthBits "24"
SET gxResolution "1280x1024"

The best resolution that I can achieve is 1024x768. I am therefore forced to emulate a desktop window, rather than running full-screen, to stop X from rescaling my desktop. My Wine desktop is configured to 1280x1024, which matches my monitor's resolution.

This is what Wine gives me in Direct3D mode. (I have set the Video Memory to 253MB via the registry.):

This is actually OK as far as the login screen. The crash happens when I press the "quit" button. I haven't requested a "trial activation key" yet, and so cannot comment on how well WoW runs beyond that.

WoW crashes before the login screen when run using OpenGL, and then asks me if I'd like to file an error report:

This is all happening on FC5 with a 256 MB Radeon9200 video card and XOrg 7.0.

Can anyone suggest anything to stop the OpenGL from crashing, please? Is this client any different from the current WoW client?

Thanks for any information,
Chris

P.S. The client identifies itself as "Version 1.11.0 (5428) (Release)", dated June 15 2006

my problem is FIXED! yay.

running wine as root is not good (i agree), but that wasn't the problem.

for some reason it won't run if you are using Xgl. So I switched everything back to X and it runs perfect!!!

runs perfect in directx too as far as frame rates go, there's just some textrure stretching is all.

i'll paste my configuration again just so everyone has it. if you have any problems and have the same setup you can msn me at ofeet@hotmail.com (no emails cuz I don't use them for email)

using xorg 7.1
xorg server 1.0.1 (i think it worked with 1.1.1 too)
experimentally switch to nvidia-glx/kernel 1.0.8762 over nvidia-drivers (probably doesn't matter)

and ya...

ps you can over ride getting xorg-server as a dependency in the nvidia ebuild or do --nodeps (i think)
happy wow-ing!

Thats then because wine still use DRI I think. Not sure thought.

rankincj
Hmm it is definitly no Problem with the WoW on itself.
My guess would be to look into your graphic setup.

What graphic card you useing?
Have you installed the propretary (NVIDIA or ATI) drivers?

And try to use 1024x768. Dont worry about the lesser resolution. You wil get Fullscreen anyways (set to the resolution).
Hope it helps.
I am not using the proprietary ATI drivers because I don't want to taint my kernel. The card is a Radeon 9250, which is well-supported by Xorg. DRI is enabled and glxgears gives me just over 2000 fps. And for reference, the login screen is showing me 2 hooded guardians with red eyes and broadswords, standing either side of a stone gateway that has a snake carved upon the lintel. Glowing mist swirls through the gateway into a green valley. Music plays... So I would say that the login screen is working fine under Direct3D, as far as I can see without actually logging in  . However, since WoW is crashing before it can exit, it never writes a proper Config.wtf file.

Can anyone decipher the X error from the Direct3D case for me, please? The OpenGL error looks like an assertion-failure in the (userspace) radeon driver, and so unless someone recognises it and already knows what the fix is then I'll try chasing that through the Xorg source code myself. However, I have no idea what the Direct3D error is trying to tell me.

Cheers,
Chris

@legine As i see that you are a german WoW user, did you manage to make the german keys (ß, ö...) working in the spell bar or assign them to abilities? In chat they work fine, but not for the spell bar.

Same here, they're not working for me, too (using openbox as WM).

Furthermore, even the numpad keys don't work. I have trouble assigning them and when assigning them manually through editing the config file with an editor, they do show up on the buttons and in the config menu for shortcuts, but pressing them (no matter if num-lock is on or off) doesn't show any effect.

And another thing:
When running WoW under openbox, I realize, that the "fullscreen" acutally ain't no fullscreen as it's supossed to be, but just a window in the same size as the desktop. I'm not sure, but I think when pressing ALT and left or right mouse button, I can move it (happens every now and then in a hectic battle and is really annoying ;) ), and that could be an explanation, why my FPS are double as high under W2k compared to Linux with openbox. I haven't configured any virtual desktop size in X and stuff, but is it maybe just a configuration setting? Anyone else having it running in real fullscreen or is it not possible under X at all?

wine 0.9.20 is out......

When I fired up wow after the build I got a "hardware has changed, use default config?" and foolishly pressed yes..

Now -- I end up with wild flickering after going into buildings. Please note that it worked beautifully before 0.9.20 -- I've had it running

Yark -- okay - - it looks like the UI overlay and the detail overlay are 'flipping' with the overall image from the frame where I actually entered the building ... winecfg set with doublebuffering on and off -- same issue -- I still suspect that I ended up with a setting in config.wtf that I don't want...

one more edit -> alt-z (turn off ui) before entering building and no problems alt-z coming out of building - no problem -- gonna try to turn it on IN a building.

again edited --
UI is b0rken inside buildings in 0.9.20 - turn it off and leave it off in side a building/city.

see bug 145507 for proper patch/digest/ebuild to fix this issue .. I am posting this bug for the convenience of WoW players.

Apparently, people running 0.9.20 need to apply this one-line patch:

No mess, no fuss, no "Windows version of Mozilla" ... :D

Just one 0.5 GB download, and a bit of crunching on my MPQ files. Nice.

Thanks -- I've confirmed that the issue is 0.9.20 - I rolled back (emerge --unmerge wine && emerge -v =app-emulation/wine-0.9.20 (or the equivalent that actually works ) and DID NOT alter my Config.WTF -- no issues going into and out of buildings.

Any idea if that patch will be pushed to gentoo's ebuild for 0.9.20 or is this something that upstream will fix? (FWIW the 0.9.20 ~appeared~ to have much better memory footprint whilst it was installed on my system and running WoW.exe please note the ~appeared~ ... it wasn't a long run ...)

That patch is by an upstream developer. It was a quick fix to some of the problems he created (while fixing other issues). He will have longterm fixes in 0.9.21 I am almost positive. I would bet that 0.9.20 will be the only version that needs that patch. :)

1) the patch as submitted (and ebuild in the bugreport at bugs.gentoo.org as listed above) is confirmed to WFM. Now running wine 0.9.20-r1 (as *I* called it in the bug) with World of Warcraft - no issues entering/leaving buildings.

Griswold --
I just reviewed the overall path from which that change came. If I'm following the path correctly, I seriously doubt there'll be a fix for a while.

Tiger : If yer here -- This looks like the whole gl/parent/child/xv/pbuffer/pixbuf window thing coming full circle. We might be needing this patch for a while.

Just FYI, one of the wine developers is currently rewriting the opengl code and in the end, WoW will hopefully run without any patch, on both ati and nvidia cards.

You are using gcc-4.1.1... did you recompile your system since ?

Yes I have updated my system to gcc-4.1.1 with this guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml

other versions of wine had compiled without problems before

Hm, now I dared to switched from wine 0.9.16 to 0.9.20 because of all the positive reports. Applied the anti-flicker-patch from a few post above and guess what? I still have the "Cannot click anything" bug. Currently I am at the end of my wits. Am I the only one still having this problem even with the latest wine?

Edit: Ok, don't panic. The start script I use for WoW uses wine-pthread instead of wine. Choosing the regular wine does not give the mouse error.

I got WoW working with wine 0.9.20 by creating an overlay and using the flicker patch supplied on the Gentoo Bug Tracker on bug #145507. I called mine wine-0.9.20-r1 (probably have to change that as soon as a real r1 comes out!) ;)

I did not apply the patch to change the targetting depth, and I have no problems selecting things in game.

I am getting a lot of sound "issues" (crackling, occasional short high pitch sounds, etc). There are many sound related messages being dumped to the console as I play:

There are many, many lines like that dumped to the console as the game plays.

These appear to be quite common at the moment for many games as noted on the winehq bug tracker

I don't know if people are aware (or even care), but I found an svg World of Warcraft icon that someone made at this site. I downloaded it and saved it as /usr/share/pixmaps/wow-icon.svg to make it available for an application shortcut. :)

Cheers,
Keith.

I am having an issue with wine-0.9.20 and my ATI X300 using the SET gxApi "opengl" option. When I set this option and start the game the account login screen is flickering/scrolling and distorted. I can make out where the buttons on the screen are but that is about it. If you have ever set you monitor to a resolution it does not support that is what it looks like. And yes, I have set my resolution for the game in Config.wtf several different resolutions supported by my laptop lcd.

Here is my Config.wtf:
SET hwDetect "0"
SET gxApi "opengl"
SET gxColorBits "24"
SET gxDepthBits "24"
SET gxResolution "1280x1024"
SET gxRefresh "60"
SET gxMultisampleQuality "0.000000"
SET gxFixLag "0"
SET fullAlpha "1"
SET doodadAnim "0"
SET lodDist "100.000000"
SET SmallCull "0.040000"
SET DistCull "500.000000"
SET trilinear "1"
SET frillDensity "24"
SET farclip "450.000000"
SET specular "1"
SET pixelShaders "1"
SET particleDensity "1.000000"
SET unitDrawDist "300.000000"
SET movie "0"
SET readTOS "1"
SET readEULA "1"
Laptop specs:
Dell Inspiron 6000
ATI Radeon X300 with x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.27.10-r1
Kernel 2.6.17.6 (vanilla)
Wine 0.9.20

Any suggestions?

ordord00: grab this patch and apply it: http://roderick.student.utwente.nl/wow_hack.patch It will fix all flickering problems. 0.9.18-0.9.19 work fine for ATi. A wine developer is working on getting wine and WoW to work together for _all_ cards. To do this, it required him to break some stuff in the mean time. It should be fixed in the 0.9.21 release of wine. (whenever that is released...)

Can you explain how to apply this patch. I already try to modify the ebuilds and insert the patch wow-patch-0.9.20.diff in it but it gaves me this error

I just built it this a.m. and it cant even run winecfg !

For me it's working now,

and this one:

also added this to my registry:

http://appdb.winehq.org/commentview.php?iAppId=1922&iVersionId=5606&iThreadId=14684

my fps is much better now.

somewhere below in the list you will find a script to start WOW on display 3 to increase fps, haven't tested it now.

I am using a nvidia card.
