how to emerge a specific version of an application?

Ok, this is a pretty basic question but I can't find it in the portage manual.

If xfree 4.2.1 doesn't work, but I need to install xfree 4.2.0 , how do I tell it to install a specific version?

emerge unmerge xfree
then ??

emerge /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree<version>.ebuild

full path, or you could mask it in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
