No sound in Quake3 Arena

i have a built-in sound card which works using the als driver intel-8x0
and when i play Quake i dont get any sound at all and i can't find out from where i can edit the config or change the sound driver used by the game

can anyone help plz

This might be due to some sort of "incompability" of the q3 engine and alsa sound. oss should work fine!

also the same problem here
and i tried step 2 & 3
and the sound works fine in the menu of the game but as soon as i start to play it hangs and the sound keep repeating itself and i had to kill Xfree

any new tip here plz ?

and ow can i remove what he step 2 & 3 have done, i need to play the game again evn if witout sound

i have what echo added to teh files in step 2&3 as mentioned on linuxquestions.org
and i assured that the user can access /dev/dsp

but still the game hangs on the start of any stage or fight
