|

I have "Network packet filtering" built into my kernel, but when I try to start IPTables, it complains:
Code: |
root@localhost linux # iptables -L
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.7a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
root@localhost linux #
|
Is there another kernel option that I need to select? I looked through the networking section and didn't anything about iptables, just the 'network packet filtering' which I selected. |

maybe you need to "emerge iptables"?
as far as your kernel goes, check these places from "make menuconfig":
under "Networking Options" make sure to say "y" to "Network packet filtering (replaces ipchains)". You'll then have the option below for "IP: Netfilter Configuration --->". Open that one up and turn on the appropriate options there.
Post here again if you're not sure which iptables support options you need.

Thanks for the help. The problem was that I had missed the Netfilter Configuration sub-options, thinking that I was already seeing the sub-options below. I'm recompiling now, and hopefully that will do it. |

Please post back if you are successful. I compiled the kernel with the proper options and I am having the same problem that you are having. I am trying to setup a home network with a Gentoo server and an XP client. |

I didn't have time to reboot with the new kernel until today, but I recompiled with the options mentioned above, and iptables works fine now.
Incidentally, to anybody else who wants an easy gui interface for creating a basic firewall, check out kmyfirewall (if you're running kde) in portage. |
