I try to emerge php_4.3.9 .
I successfully emerge cracklib-2.7-r9.
But emerging php occurs with error: "cannot find cracklib library file"

hi. hum, i really dont see the dependence between cracklib and mod_php4. I have mod_php-5.0.2 and it works fine. Why dont you try mod_php-4.3.9_rc1?? could you put here the exact commands that you are executing, and more about the error??

There is a Bug filed for this.
A Workaround is to downgrade the cracklib:

PHP 4.3.9 will emerge then.
You could then also
| Code: | | emerge --inject sys-apps/cracklib-2.7-r9 |
to prevent it from reappearing during emerge system/world.

I'd like to add the following as the latest version of portage no longer likes the --inject option.
Instead you'll have to do the following:

Forget what I said before.
After a great deal of work I got php-5 running with mod_php-5 (have to remove that /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask entry).
Then you MUST /etc/init.d/apache2 stop and /etc/init.d/apache2 start (RESTART DOES NOT WORK)
jeez, what a pita.

I'm going to try yamakawa's method and see if that works. I'm sure downgrading works but I do like to have the latest versions of packages when I can.

I also had problems compiling php 4.3.10 and downgrading cracklib back to 2.7 fixed the problem, for anyone having similar issues.

What can I do except downgrading? And, actually, why does the latest PHP in the repository have version 4, but not 5?

Ooohhh....jeeeeezzz.. I'm trying to downgrade the cracklib ebuild, to be able to merge mod_php, and i keep getting the following:

I simply masked cracklib 2.8.2 - that stops it being installed when you next update world. If you don't want to do that, cracklib-2.7-r10 has disappeared, but cracklib-2.7-r11 should work.

I hope, after that, i will be able to merge mod_php....

I have successfully emerged mod_php, and php, and now everything is OK!

So since cracklib 2.8.3 is out, does it fix this?

Nope...
/etc/portage/package.mask now contains:
>=sys-libs/cracklib-2.8.2
And now mod_php is successfully emerged...

curently have cracklib-2.7-r11
my package.mask:
