I am now, finally, starting X OK, both with IceWM and Gnome. The problem is when I open a terminal (xterm or gnome-terminal), things are wacky. For xterm, the characters are completely incorrect gibberish. In Gnome, the window pops up for a while, then disappears. Any ideas appreciated.

Do you get any output when starting X?

If you use startx to load X, you'll get some info in the console after exiting. How about konsole, or any other terminal? Any other programs have font problems?

I was having font problems with IceWM in general, but I fixed font paths in fonts.conf, which solved everything but the terminal problem. I'm away from the computer now, but will try the suggestions on the konsole topic Monday.

Could this be relevant (from X log):

Code:
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory) Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!

I looked in this directory and the fonts and fonts.list etc. are all there.

I also have problems with fonts on buttons and text fields in dialog boxes. It seems that they don't quite fit. The strange thing is that when I enter text into the field, or click the button (or mouse over entered text in an xterm for that matter) the text is displayed correctly.
