Finally, yesterday I decided it's time to switch to 2.6
First, I tried vanilla-2.6.9, but having nvidia I got nothing but troubles.
Then, I compiled vanilla-2.6.8.1, and it works perfectly.
I just wonder, why the newer version gains bugs? |

After you have done emerge --sync how do you go back to an older version of the kernel when emerging gentoo-dev-sources? |

@yahont
What kind of problems do you get? Any error messages? Did you use the same config?

1. I have prejudice against patched kernels, so I use vanilla-sources
2. To sitch back to older version u can do:
Code: | emerge <gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9 |
or
Code: | emerge =gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8 |

the problem was that nvidia module couldn't be loaded |

OK, just to be sure, you did:
- emerge nvidia-kernel for your new kernel
- set the stacks parameter in the kernel properly
- use the new version from "~X86"
Then it might be helpful to paste some messages in your next post.

the messages are gone. sorry, i needed to have it running - 2.6.9, 2.6.8, 2.6.7, or etc. , no matter.
I didn't use ~x86, because - as I'm aware - it means to accept even a version which wasn't checked for stability.
I understand that might be the problem, but I don't want to play on the box I'm working (not playing) on.
P.S. I have two processors box, as I heard it can matter |

There is known breakage of the nvidia kernel module with kernel 2.6.9. The stable version doesn't load at all and the ~x86 version loads but will eventually cause a NULL pointer dereference somewhere and break.
I just downgraded to 2.6.8 and all is well. I imagine there will be a patch out soon to fix it, even if it's only on Gentoo. The kernel developers themselves aren't so keen on supporting binary-only drivers (though the nvidia one is so popular there'd be quite a fuss if they just up and broke it and refused to fix it). |

I am using the development-sources and 2.6.9 works well with nvidia for me. _________________ The soul, when accustomed to superfluous things, acquires a strong habit of desiring things. This desire is without limit, while things which are necessary are few in number. |

That's true. However on my box (Geforce II MX on Asus A7V), the "unstable" driver is working under 2.6.9-rc2-love4 (and before, too) without problems.

I thought this has been patched. At any rate, I'm using the 2.6.9 kernel (vanilla) with nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r2 and nvidia-glx-1.0.6111 without problems (the stable version of nvidia-kernel did not work at all for me). |

I also had problems with gentoo-2.6.9 and nvidia.
I tried the x86-version but no way to resart the x-server.
The vanilla-kernel works sufficient although i cannot switch to a console whitch was possible with gentoo-2.6.7 before.
The system is quite stable and i can play ut2003. |
