I started my desktop for the first time in weeks, did an emerge sync and at the end of that process I got this error:
Code: | !!! 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'
!!! 'rm -Rf /usr/portage/profiles; emerge sync' may fix this. If it does
!!! not then please report this to bugs.gentoo.org and, if possible, a dev
!!! on #gentoo (irc.freenode.org) |
Now emerge won't even display version information - the above is all I get. Somebody familiar with the problem before I go post a bug report? I can't emerge ircii either so I can't go talk to the devs in the channel.
This is a pretty new Gentoo installation and it all seemed well until now. No unstable packages or anything.

For some reason the /etc/make.profile symlink pointed to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004.2. I changed it to /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-2004.2 and now all is well. Weird - I haven't changed it myself, but perhaps it's some quirk of the 2004.2-r1 livecd I used.

Thanks for the tip. Ran into the same bug today after "emerge sync" _________________ Do you want your posessions identified? [ynq] (n) |
