What package(s) is/are intended to be used for viewing real media stuff? RealPlayer and Helix Player Binaries don't work for me, can anyone tell me what to use?

Thanks in advance,
Robert

i installed on my /home partition in a 32-bit chroot RealPlayer 10 Gold from the RealPlayer site.
When I execute now that binary in 64-bit it seems to work too. Don't ask me why, it just does.

In what way does RealPlayer not work? It's working fine for me.

Here is what I did...
  • Download the RealPlayer 10 rpm from realplayer.com
  • use rpm2targz on the file and extract the resulting tgz
  • copy the files in the extracted archive to the location of your choosing. (I chose to put the files into "/opt/RealPlayer")
  • copy or link /opt/RealPlayer/realplay to /usr/bin/realplay
  • edit /usr/bin/realplay, uncomment the line that starts with "HELIX_LIBS=" and replace the path with the appropriate one ("/opt/RealPlayer")
  • (optional - add the dnet codec so you can preview music on Amazon, etc). Find a copy of RealOne. Copy ddnt.so.6.0 and dnet.so.6.0 to /opt/RealPlayer/codecs. Link them to ddnt.so and dnet.so in the same directory.

I get that kind of junk with all sorts of working 32-bit apps too, so I'm not sure it's significant. I have not had much success getting realplayer working on my system either, though... it pops up a window, then freezes solid -- needs kill -9 before it'll go away. All in all a standard Real(tm) performance.

Did you guys compile UTF-8 support into your kernel under Native Language Support (NLS)?

Compiled it as a module. Loading it before starting realplay doesn't help.

I get similar gdk warnings when I start RealPlayer. (Also for Firefox). I have UTF-8 support compiled directly into my kernel, too.

Are you sure you have all the required libraries? If you have installed to /opt/RealPlayer try...
Code:
ldd /opt/RealPlayer/realplay.bin
and see if you get any missing dependencies.

I'll also add my own woes. Prior to my past several days of bootstrapping the 2004.3 amd62 iso(gcc3.4,nptl,etc.) I had a working RealPlayer10 up and running on my laptop.
I've just downloaded the RealPlayer10GOLD.bin, made it executable and then tried running the binary file with:
Code:
 # ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin
./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Next:
Code:
# find /usr -iname libstdc++.so.5
/usr/lib/libstdc++-v3/libstdc++.so.5

Next:
Code:
 # ldd RealPlayer10GOLD.bin
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
        libstdc++.so.5 => not found
        libdl.so.2 => /lib32/libdl.so.2 (0x5557c000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0x5557f000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x55555000)

How can I correct this?
TIA, Bill

EDIT - Turns out I was missing 'emul-linux-x86-gtklibs'. Once installed I was able to get RealPlayer10 up and running again.(11/09/04)

First of all, I'd like thanks to fpoprocks for giving the instruction on this issue.

fpoprocks wrote:

[*] edit /usr/bin/realplay, uncomment the line that starts with "HELIX_LIBS=" and replace the path with the appropriate one ("/opt/RealPlayer")

And there I got this message:
./realplay: line 70: /usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay.bin: No such file or directory

So I "ldd realplay.bin", and found out:
/usr/bin/ldd: line 1: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: No such file or directory
ldd: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 exited with unknown exit code (127)

My question is, what is "ld-linux.so.2", and how do I solve this problem? I guess one package is missing to install, but don't know what.

/lib/ld-linux.so.2 is a symlink to /emul/linux/x86/lib/ld-linux.so.2
Both are installed by
Code:
emerge emul-linux-x86-glibc

I get the same UTF8 error msgs, but all the new realplayer stuff is working. Some of the older RealPlayer stuff doesn't work, because it's deprecated! You just get a nasty msg that tell you to f'off

I was little drunk, thinking nothing but looking this machine. And suddenly idea comes up. Now I see Realplayer is working on my machine. I've learned that sometimes drinking helps :D

Now there are two extra packages to add above to the one bverheg kindly told us. And these were:

emul-linux-x86-compat
emul-linux-x86-gtklibs

And this should be it. I checked to see if I can listen BBC Radio 1, and it did works. Find yourself whether it works on your machine.

I emerge all that mentioned above and still get the error:

Code:

Previously discussed problem was library loading. branana, your problem is a missing executable path, not library problem (as from the error you said).
just find where realplay.bin is (slocate -u; locate realplay.bin) and edit /usr/bin/realplay with nano (or any text editor) and replace line 70 with what you`ve got from locate realplay.bin

I'm just trying to install RealPlayer also, but I have a problem. LDD gives me the following:
Quote:
ldd /opt/RealPlayer/realplay.bin
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000)
libstdc++.so.5 => /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.5 (0x5557e000)

libatk-1.0.so.0 => not found
libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0 => not found

libgmodule-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libgmodule-2.0.so.0 (0x55693000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib32/libdl.so.2 (0x55698000)
libglib-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib32/libglib-2.0.so.0 (0x5569b000)
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 => not found
libpthread.so.0 => /lib32/libpthread.so.0 (0x5571b000)
libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0x5576e000)
libX11.so.6 => /emul/linux/x86/usr/X11R6/lib32/libX11.so.6 (0x55885000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib32/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x55951000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x55555000)

And now I don't have any idea, which libs I have to emerge in order to solve these requirements, cause none of these missing libs are really found by emerge.

I tried with and without the changes to realplay suggested by fpoprocks but the error is the same.

I'm surprised there isn't an ebuild that does this all for you...

I have this running standalone but I can't get the plugin to work in firefox. I have copied nphilix.so and nphilix.xpt to ~/.mozilla/plugins but when I do an about:plugins all of my other plugins (mplayer, flashplayer, kaffeine, java) all show up but no realplayer. Is there something else I need to do?

I'm just trying to install RealPlayer also, but I have a problem. LDD gives me the following:
Code:
ldd /opt/RealPlayer/realplay.bin
linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
libstdc++.so.5 => /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.5 (0x5557e000)
libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0 => not found

<snip, snip>

And now I don't have any idea, which libs I have to emerge in order to solve these requirements, cause none of these missing libs are really found by emerge.

That will be solved if You install "emul-linux-x86-gtklibs". In addition to this I had to fix some broken symlinks on my machine, somewhere in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/blah. Can't remember right now - if You can't sort it out, post Your problems, I'll look back into it this evening.

Greetings,

Ever managed to fix this in the meantime (being about, well, a day ;) )?

Edit: never mind, I have. Just re-emerged emul-linux-x86-gtklibs :D
