Hello,
I love Gentoo, and want to put it on an old Ultra 10 here at work. I got the stage1 for sparc64, is this correct? Anyways, I got to the part where you bootstrap the system, and having done this about 20 times on x86's, felt confident that there would be no problems. During the bootstrap, the process fails when emergind glibc. So, I tried to manually emerge it. It is masked, so I trid to unmask/emerge it like I have to do on x86's sometimes. Here is my session:
Code: |
livecd portage # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~sparc" emerge =sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20041006
Calculating dependancies
aux_get(): (0) Error in sys-libs/glibc- |
and it lists all the masked versions of glibc over and over...
Code: |
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20041006" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
aux_get(): (0) Error in sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20041006 ebuild. (2816)
Check for syntax error or corruption in the ebuild. (--debug)
!!! Problem in =sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20041006 dependancies.
!!! exceptions
livecd portage # |
So, I'm not sure what the problem is and need some help. I'd definitely like to learn how to fix this, and also learn what it is that I don't understand about emerging masked packages. Thanks for all your help in advance!
Best,
Bob |

It looks like this:
Code: |
CFLAGS="-mcpu=ultrasparc -mtune=ultrasparc -03 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -freorder-blocks -falign-functions=4 -fstack-protector"
CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=ultrasparc -mtune=ultrasparc -03 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -freorder-blocks -falign-functions=4 -fstack-protector"
CHOST="sparc64-unknown-linux-gnu"
USE-"-X apache2 bxlib crypt curl doc ftp gd imapo java mime mysql ncurses pdflib perl php samba soap spell ssl unicode vhosts xml xml2"
|
That's it for this one. Think you can help? Thanks!

I kinda figured out thatI cannot manually emerge anything yet, because I am not in a chrooted environment yet, so I have to stick with the bootstrap. Thing is, the bootstrap just keeps dying in the sam eplace as my earlier posts. Are there any ultrasparc specialists out there that can help me get gentoo on my machine? Thanks!
Best,

Sounds strange to me. IMHO, there should always be an unmasked version of glibc, even for sparc, since it is really essential. On my system, current is glibc-2.3.3.20040420-r2. What was the error when running bootstrap?
I didn't have any problems when building from stage1, but that was some time ago. Did you specify ~sparc when starting the bootstrap (Bad idea...)? Other than that, it might be some problem with your USE-flags.

Were you using a portage from a provided tarball or did you sync the tree before you started? In either case, did you try syncing the tree later and see if the problem went away? |

Monday morning, I'll emerge sync and see if that helps. I've done it once already, but maybe not since the error. The error by the way, while bootstrapping, is the same as the one I posted for the "manual" emerge of glibc a few replies ago. I've never not done a stage1 install of Gentoo. I have it runnning on many x86's and a few Macs. Since SPARC hardware is so much more uniform that all the different x86 stuff, do you think a stage2 or 3 would be highly optimmized already? I really want the stage1, so I'll keep trying, but if it takes longer than another week to figure it out, I'll go for a stage2. Thanks for the help so far, and I'll be back here to say whether or not an emerge sync helped.
Best,
