kdm crashes x

I had kde3.1rc2 working fine logging in with kdm.Since opengl crashed my machine I recompiled xfree with i686 CFLAGS to if that does make a difference.
Anyway - after this I checked /etc/rc.conf and did rc-update add xdm default.When I boot it tries to start kdm now but all I get is a sreen that flickers twice and then goes back to command line.
twm works fine and all the apps too from within twm.
I am slightly confused.

Forget it - had to do opengl-update xfree.No idea why though.
