Gaaaah! I'm using wdm and windowmaker with xorg.

I have put some applications I want to auto-start in:

~/.xinitrc
~/.xsession
~/.Xclients
/etc/X11/xinitrc
/etc/X11/Sessions/Xsession
/etc/X11/Sessions/wmaker

They just don't start and it's driving me crazy.

I have to start my screensaver by hand every time I turn my laptop on if I want it to work.

Can anybody help me? Thanks.

Post your .xsession file, please.

Here it is, currently:
Code:
/usr/bin/xscreensaver -no-splash &

mods set 0755, no #!/bin/sh at the top. Does that sound right?

I solved Part A of the problem, which is that it needs to be executable. But now, when it is marked executable, my window manager never gets loaded. I can see /etc/X11/Sessions/Xsession calls xsm if no executable init files are found, so I'm guessing that since ~/.xsession is executable it never calls xsm. Do I need to start xsm from my .xsession?

Put this in ~/.xsession, chmod +x it, and try again.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/env bash

/usr/bin/xscreensaver --no-splash &

exec /usr/bin/wmaker

That did it, thanks.

No problem. I suggest changing the topic of the first post so that its header reads [SOLVED] so that anybody else looking to help can see that you've been taken care of.
