I dont know but...

slocate kmenu.png
...
/usr/share/icons/Crystal-102802/16x16/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Crystal-102802/32x32/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Crystal-102802/48x48/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Crystal-102802/64x64/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Crystal-102802/128x128/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Bluecurve/16x16/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Bluecurve/32x32/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/share/icons/Bluecurve/48x48/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/kde/3/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/kde/3/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/kmenu.png
/usr/kde/3/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/kmenu.png

Maybe replacing currently used icon with your own
of appropriate size/"format"/name might work ?
Just an idea (am != artist).

I forget the name, but look for the icon in /usr/share/pixmaps. Find an icon you want to use instead and replace the file. Back it up first, of course.

This doesn't seem to work anymore! Anyone know how to accomplish this little tweak in Gnome 2.16?

- Menu->System tools->configuration editor
- apps->Panel->Objects
- Find the object where 'object-type' is 'menu-object'
- check 'use_custom_icon'
- set the value of 'custom_icon' to the path of the button. It should change as soon as you set the path.

That won't work in KDE either.
Check out the KIP (KDE Improvement Project) in these forums for patches that will allow you to change the Kmenu icons for KDE users.

Same here. Cannot change icon in 2.16 I've been doing this for years and 2.14 to 2.16 update killed this. I really would like to know how, since the gconf setting does not work either.

Solution:
$ gconf-editor
Navigate to apps->panel->objects
Search all objects (ex, object_0), look for one that the tooltip key is Main Menu.
Check the use_custom_icon box.
Double click the custom icon property and insert the path to your icon in the value.

Is this the menu bar?
Looks like this:
Applications Places System

If so, it will be object_type: menu-bar

Same instructions apply here.

the custom icon only works if the object is a menu-object, if it's a menu-bar it doesn't change the icon and ignores the changes as it says on the description.

cheers

Correct. I just tested and this does not in fact work with the menu-bar object. However, the original question was about the main menu, which does in fact work as I previously mentioned. I have no clue where the heck they expect that to be changed.

is it what ppl call gnome usability?

gnome sucks pretty bad, being almost a novell product they hide it because all other distros put their logo there.

i must agree with Mr. Linus

linux for me isn't about freedom of choose, but the only choice that i have.
actually i can call it "lack of choice" instead of "freedom of choice".

i don't use gnome because i like it but because all other alternatives seems worst.

back to the topic, i've foud a a easy way to change the foot icon.

open gconf-editor go edit > find > mark the 2 checkboxes named "search also in key names/values" and search for "menu-object".

you should find only one key, i guess the path is "/apps/panel/objects/object_0/"

in this field check "use_custom_icon" key, and edit "custom_icon" key value with the path to your new button.

tip: scroll up to find "custom_icon" key, it's above "use_custom_icon" key, i'm a such moron and lost a little time to find it

my apologies if my explanation is a bit (or totally) confused, english is not my language and i barelly use it.

Cheers

The instructions here work for me:
http://strabes.wordpress.com/2006/10/16/change-the-menu-bar-logo-on-ubuntu-dapper/

It's just a matter of finding where the icon theme one is using will look for the distributor-logo image. It took me some trial and error to discover that I needed to add it to /usr/share/icons/Tango/48x48/places.

Those instructions are for changing the icon of the gnome menu bar - that's the three-part menu ("Applications," "Places," "System"). To change the main menu icon - that's the single-list menu - the "custom icon" settings can be changed with gconf editor as discussed earlier.
