can you use nautilus with a user other than root?
I assume you are trying to do this with root cause one error refs /root/.gnome-desktop. If I am completely wrong in this assumption, let me know. ;)

What version of nautilus do you have? What version of Xfree?

yo,

It happens with any user i create. i'm running nautilus 2.0.7 and xfree 4.2.1. i reemerged both and same problem. probably one of the stranger problems i've ever had in unix, heh. just did a clean install on my ibook and it works fine. it's strange that it says these directories are not valid locations since they are present. if i remove the directories it complains about gnome recreates them when i restart gnome. any ideas?

thanks,

Chris :)

I have found that gnome 2.0.2 runs better with xfree 4.2.1-r1, but YMMV.
You have to do ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~arch" to get it, as it is experimental.

I installed gentoo on my laptop and had no problems, but I just installed it on my desktop, and i get the exact same errors you are getting, with all my users. Also, the applications menu is empty.

I am using ~x86.

There are errors in my .gnomerc-error file which I think may be telling the tale:

Code:

(gnome-panel:1008): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libvfolder-desktop.so' (/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libvfolder-desktop.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

(nautilus:1010): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

Those lines are repeated many times. There are no shared libs in /usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/.

Make sure you have gnome-vfs-2.0.4.1 . And squinto : there is not so much difference between 2.4.1 and 2.4.1-r1 that affects GNOME. I'd say 2.4.1 is better for GNOME even, because of things it has that 2.4.1-r1 doesnt.

Sorry, but that makes no sense to me. What does version number have to do with why my machine is not building shared libs?

My laptop (which works fine) has gnome-vfs-2.0.4-r2 and it has shared libs while my desktop (which does not work fine) has 2.0.4.1 and it does not have shared libs.

Just to be clear, both machines are also using ~x86.

I'll try re-emerging gnome-vfs once my new r10 kernel is finished building.

Well, I am quite happy to say that re-emerging gnome-vfs did the trick. I have no idea why, but this time it built the shared libs along with th static libs.

This battlestation is now fully operational ... well, except for galeon, evolution, gnomeicu ... oi, gentoo is sweet but man the process for getting to sweetness long. :D

Did you mean 4.2.1? About the xfree versions?
If so, I will comment, if not, please disregard what I am about to say.
I found that with 4.2.1 that gdm login to a gnome session would leave me staring at the pretty splash screen for about 30 secs and then restart xfree and bring me back to gdm. Once upgrading to 4.2.1-r1 I no longer had this problem. That is the only reason I had suggested 4.2.1-r1.

What features does 4.2.1 have over 4.2.1-r1 as per gnome use?

Thanks,
-Andrew

I have the same problem.

I typed:

emerge gnome -vfs

I got:

* x11-terms/gnome-terminal
Latest version available: 2.0.2
Latest version installed: 2.0.2
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: The Gnome Teminal

* x11-terms/multi-gnome-terminal
Latest version available: 1.6.1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Homepage: http://multignometerm.sourceforge.net/
Description: Extended versionof the Gnome Terminal

* x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme [ Masked ]
Latest version available: 0.1.1
Latest version installed: [ Not installed ]
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Gnome2 default icon theme

* x11-themes/gnome-themes [ Masked ]
Latest version available: 0.3
Latest version installed: [ Not installed ]
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Gnome2 default themes

Is the reason that Nautilus is not working that I am lacking these files? Could someone make detailed instructions for a newbie as to how to get Nautilus working.

Thanks.

It is gnome-vfs (one word, no space, if you put a space then portage thinks it is taking command line arguments). Try:
Code:
emerge gnome-vfs -p
and then do :
Code:
emerge gnome-vfs
. ;)

I too am having the same problem (including the missing applications, guessing it's all related).
I emerged gnome-vfs and gnome a few times over and still no go.
I also have those shared library errors in my gnome error file.
Any help is appreciated.

I followed your instructions but I still get the same error messages. Is it possible now that gnome-vfs is downloaded that it needs to be hard linked?

Where can I find the gnome errors file that the other posters refered to?

Because my lack of personal faith in my skills makes me think it's something i borked and don't want to file a bug on something that may be based off of a silly mis step on my end.

If I ever reproduce the problem in my journies soon, I will post a report, but I can't remember exactly what went wrong when, when it happened to me.
Sorry.

PostPosted: Thu Dec 05, 2002 4:49 pm    Post subject: ran nautilus --check Reply with quote

I got this repeating:

(nautilus:3254): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module '/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so' (/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libfile.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

I checked the directory and the file is not there. Can I run portage so that I only get this particular file and all its dependencies?

Someone please enclose really simple instructions for a newbie.

Thanks!

to update/reinstall gnome-vfs you can just do a simple "emerge gnome-vfs", but if you want to emerge all the dependancies use "emerge -e gnome-vfs". Be careful though, as with the -e flag it will install _everything_ that a package depends on.
Also see the Portage Manual (en) for more info

Had the same problem with gnome-vfs, tried re-emerging it, but that didn't work.

So I emerged gnome-vfs-2.0.4-r2, not the best solution I bet, but it works. All the missing applications are there, nautilus launches, and no crashes as of yet.

Give it a try..

I have the same problem.
Along with gnome-vfs problem I have "Segmentation fault" in gnome-panel.
All advises above don't help.
where is my Gnome2 desktop?
Could anyone help with versions of gnome packages before this last upgrade?
