This morning I ran emerge world and as a result updated the gentoolkit. However, near the end of the output I noticed this:

Quote:
>>> original instance of package unmerged safely.
* The 'useflag' utility has been removed, pending an overhaul. It has proven to be too brittle to be used safely.
* The 'etc-update' utility has been moved to portage.
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
>>> app-admin/gentoolkit-0.1.17-r4 merged.
>>> Recording app-admin/gentoolkit in "world" favorites file...

Are they serious? I've never had a problem related to my USE flags. Well, except now, when I run something like qpkg -I -nc | xargs emerge -p, I'm starting to get the gnome related packages I didn't want to install like:

Quote:
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/ORBit-0.5.17
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-libs-1.4.2

That was the whole point of the USE flags, i.e USE="-gnome -kde" etc.

If the USE flags are gone, will there be some other way to keep features from being compiled into the ebuilds, like a command line parameter passed to emerge or something?

The USE settings in make.conf are still applicable. The useflag utility from gentoolkit is gone.
