It's just that whenever the French are mentioned on forums and slashdot people jump all over the coward stereotype.

Its strange that such a strong stereotype has evolved from that one governmental/military decision 60 years ago.

theres a known joke that french tanks only have reverse gears and one forward in case the tank gets stuck. also google had that famous egg.

i dont really hate the french or have anything against them. they just seem to be quite opportunist folk when it comes to world politics nowadays and tend to get their hand into everything. and they also pretend as if they dont know english :)

its not really as if they are that much of cowards, they just chose the wrong strategy and it collapsed on them. thats what happens when you apply the strategy from the former war on the next one.

Personally I quite like them and any joking aside, tbh consider the bravery that many showed in WWII to be far in excess of that showed by many of the allies. Sure they got their arse kicked at the outset but so did everyone and the British retreat back to blighty as fast as our little legs could carry us was not exactly the heroic retreat that films such as Dunkirk and various history books portray.

Once we were back, we were then forced to rely on many foreign nationals (approx 1/6 of the pilots) including members of the Free French for our defence during the Battle of Britain. When we were fighting in Africa there were something in the region of 100 000 Free French fighting alongside, when it came to the invasion of France in '44 that number was up to over 400 000 including many that were fighting from the south in the often ignored invasion (doesn't quite have the same film value  ) that was in actual fact almost equally important as the invasion in the north. Add to that the work of the French Resistance, work which many a so-called brave person would find far too risky to get involved with (knowing it may well mean the death of his/her loved ones or a large number of his/her village), and all in all most historians would tell you France made a massive contibution during the war, even more remarkable considering their occupied status.

Unfortunately for the French, they didn't get to write the popular history derived from TV and film.

Regardless of these events specifically and in answer to the original question, people attack the French because they're an easy target in the same way the Brits attack the Irish or the Irish attack the Kerryman, it is human nature to denigrate another regardless of fact in order to improve self esteem.

well, considering that US never had full-force german army on them, and the French did, I'd say Frenchies were ok. Not their fault they never thought of Blitzkrieg.

BTW, 75% of German Army was commited to Russian Front, and 25% elsewhere (Western Europe, Balkans, North Africa). So that story about americans saving our asses is kinda untrue. Sure, they did help, but ultimately it was russkies that defeated germans. Most of all Hitler defeated himself by attacking russia, but thats another story.

Nothing wrong with the french
- Good food
- now & then a very good movie (i like jp jeunet's work alot, along with some stuff from luc besson)
- a nice (but way overused) vacation destination

the flemish saying goes "Living like god in france" so it can't be that bad :)

Let me put it this way, I don't have any problem with the French but I'm sure that if I showed up in France they'd certainly have a problem with me... and that kind of pisses me off.

From Amazon.uk summary..

In 'A YEAR IN THE MERDE' Stephen Clarke describes the French as they really are...

"They're not cheese-eating surrender monkeys, but they do eat a lot of cheese, some of which smells like pigs' droppings. In general, they do not wash their armpits with garlic soap. They are still in shock at being stupid enough to sell Louisiana and thereby losing the chance to make French the global language..."

This is definitely on my wish list :-D

Otherwise I agree with The Ennead's entry

Never ask the British about the French. The answer is always biased, they almost hate the French as much as the Germans did until around 50 years ago (we even had a term for that: "Erbfeind". This means something like "inbred enemy" or "inherited enemy", as if this hatred were caused by our genes or something)

Why? What would be the problem... you tryig to expalin hey Im American I want special treatment at customs or you saying you have a constitutional right to carry a gun or what?

Are you just objectionable in general? Why would they have a problem---?

A poll in the papers yesterday showed the vast majority of French people like Americans and equally detest your present foreign policy ...

French wine is overrated and overpriced.

Australian and Spanish wines are far superior, and reasonable facsimiles of French vintages can be had much more cheaply from American West Coast vineyards. (I'm looking forward to South American wines improving.)

Not so bad in the cheeses, but still a problem.

The French have been resting on their cultural laurels since Hugo.

Not really its your market which sets the price.
I can buy quite a few good bottles here at $3-$4 a bottle and of course lots of sub 1$ cheap shit...
If you are paying $20 for the wine that is $3 here then it is your market overpricing it!

There are some excellent West Coast wines too... as with South african and Austrailian..

but I still don't see why the price of wine is going to ake you hate a nation or call them all cowards!
