gnome loads well if i load it from the console with exec gnome-session in the .xinitrc file; when there is no such reference in the .xsession or i start it from gdm, it shows the gnome splash screen, but doesn't load anything at all; too bad; any ideas?

emerge -s xft :

x11-libs/xft [ Masked ]
Latest version available: 2.0-r1
Latest version installed: 2.0-r1
Size of downloaded files: 525 kB
Homepage: http://fontconfig.org/
Description: Xft2

I think this is what you are looking for.

ok; this wasn't the actual problem; the problem is the following:
** ERROR **: Failed to match any font. This could be due to a broken Xft configuration, or if you run XFree 4.1.0 due to a bug in libXrender. For more information about this, read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68030

any ideas? don't have a clue about the xft stuff and how to configure it

You dont have any TT fonts for pango to use, due to some config problem. You most likely want to set fontpaths in your XftConfig correct (4.2.1-r1) (etc-update in some cases), or check a bit around the forums because almost any gnome/gdm problem around atm comes from this.

This looks like a problem I also had. Try using the tips in this thread

Hope this helps you out :)

I had a problem like this, when gdm would try to load gnome it would sit at the splash for about 20 sec and then bring me back to gdm again. If this is what is happening for you, I found that emerging xfree 4.2.1-r1 fixes the problem. I didn't do much research as to why this happens, but it worked for me. YMMV
