I've been fighting with this since I upgraded my system about a week ago. I have tried using both the kernel native drivers and the alsa drivers available on portage.
Sound works either way, BUT the mixer controls do not function at all. The PCM slider in gnome-volume-control acts like an on/off switch rather than a variable control, and the rest of the sliders do nothing. Volume controls in XMMS with alsa (alsa-xmms) also do not work.
Anyone have any ideas? Let me know if you need more info.

what version of ALSA are you using?
Consider upgrading to release canidate 5 or greater and using the via82xx module. |

I've tried using 0.9.0_rc5 first, Now I am using the masked ebuild of 0.9.0_rc6. The sound works fine, save for not being able to control the volume via software.
Thanks for the reply..
