Hi all,

I've got a big problem with my ultra5 disk partitioning
I've got 2 different disks but the problem is the same (maybe me...)
on fdsik I can use only 7Gb of 40gb disk and don't know why!

I've tried with these disks:

IBM IC35L040AVVN07
Maxtor 6E040L07

at the boot I Can read the right message (hda 41100Mb)
this is my fdisk Sun label

Command (m for help): s
Building a new sun disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only,
until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous
content won't be recoverable.

Drive type
? auto configure
0 custom (with hardware detected defaults)
a Quantum ProDrive 80S
b Quantum ProDrive 105S
c CDC Wren IV 94171-344
d IBM DPES-31080
e IBM DORS-32160

j SUN0327
k SUN0340
l SUN0424
m SUN0535
n SUN0669
o SUN1.0G
p SUN1.05
q SUN1.3G
r SUN2.1G
s IOMEGA Jaz
Select type (? for auto, 0 for custom): 0
Heads (1-1024, default 16): 16
Sectors/track (1-1024, default 63): 63
Cylinders (1-65535, default 14242): 16383
Alternate cylinders (0-65535, default 2):
Using default value 2
Physical cylinders (0-65535, default 16385):
Using default value 16385
Rotation speed (rpm) (1-100000, default 5400): 7200
Interleave factor (1-32, default 1):
Using default value 1
Extra sectors per cylinder (0-32, default 0):
Using default value 0

I red many kind of posts and did many actions but the problem still remain..
is 40Gb an unlucky size?
Please help me

Really thanx :(

Does the drive show up in your BIOS as being 40 Gb or 7 Gb? How old is your machine and what architecture is it?

I just got my Ultra5 up and going last weekend. I guessed things right.. but here is some help. After fdisk do the "o" command to do just an empty DOS partition table:

Code:
Command (m for help): o
Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only,
until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous
content won't be recoverable.

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 9156.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hda: 75.3 GB, 75329372160 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9156 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System

Command (m for help):

Now I have some good numbers for my drive.... now go to "s" and do the custom "0" as you did before. Try the numbers that you just got from "o" mode.

Hi all, thanx so much for the answer.
These are my results:

use sun4u ultra5 with openboot 3.31

fdisk /dev/hda

Command (m for help): o
Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only,
until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous
content won't be recoverable.

This will happen with both the 40Gb disks
