I'm having problems similar to the ones described here
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=221426&highlight=dmfe
here
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=113052&highlight=dmfe
ie, the nic will stop responding at random times, and for a random length of time.
I'm using gentoo-dev-sources (2.6.8 at present, but with other 2.6.7 too)
I had problems with the auto-detection choosing tulip drivers, but I removed the tulip module and that solved that problem.
I read in one of the threads above that the dmfe driver should be compiled into the kernel rather than as a module, does anyone know why? |

Dunno why it has to be in the kernel, but you could try booting with pci=noacpi If that fails, try pci=noacpi noapic |

In the end I traced this to a faulty cable!!! |
