I just added an optimization to my CFLAGS. How can I recompile all the packages on my system with the new optimizations? Do I just do an emerge -up world? Would that recompile KDE as well?

No... Changing your CFLAGS and then doing an emerge -u world won't cause any packages to be recompiled with your new setting (unless of course you had done an emerge sync since you changed the CFLAG, and then only the packages with updates would get built.).

Your new CFLAGS will be used for all future packages.

How could I get all the old packages to recompile also? I really want to see how the optimization effects KDE.

do an emerge -ep world

then think about weather its worth it or not to wait for all that? if so, then do the above without the p :) Its going to take a long time.

I'd also recommend reading the sticky topic at the top of this forum "CFLAGS central" before starting. Its kinda long, but there is some really good info in there.[/b]

I've decided to go ahead and recompile everything. I'll just let it go all night and most of the day tomorrow. I'll let you know how long it takes.

My system is 1.8Ghz P4 with 512MB RAM so it shouldn't take too long, (but KDE did take the better part of 6 hours! ;-) )

Thanks!
Scott
