I know how to set the wallpaper in Gnome but I am playing with just window managers in X and wondered how I can change the wallpaper from that ugly gray pattern? I'm using Waimea right now if it is window manager specific.

There are several commands you could use. xsetroot, xsetbgimg, bsetbg, bsetroot, and Esetroot are some examples. Check out their man pages for more info.

Well then I have a different problem... when I run waimea it starts up just fine except it returns the error "Esetroot: command not found".
How can I fix this?

I believe Esetroot is in the Eterm ebuild.

I think it's just Waimea is broken because all the other window managers I have come with at least a solid color background by default. I think this is an indication that I need to stay away from Waimea for a few more builds. Fluxbox seems nice, any other suggestions?

Waimea isn't broken or anything else.
Don't go away.

Waimea needs Esetroot (or a similar program) to have a background image.
Esetroot doesn't come with Waimea, beacause it's part of "Eterm"
So you must install Eterm in order to use Esetroot

ah, the line where set Esetroot with a choosen background is inside the ".style" file that you want to use

Ciao,
Riccardo

Once I emerged eterm and re-emerged waimea then it came up with a wallpaper graphic. It seems like eterm should be one of the dependencies in the waimea ebuild... Anyway thanks for your help :)

FYI: Esetroot is part of the bbrb package. you will have to emerge it.
I dont think it has any dependcies for it so it should be fine.

you can probably also use xv although I have not tried it. Basically you need something that can display an image. xsetroot which comes with X does great with solid color backgrounds and can also do bitmaps. I have found that Esetroot can also display jpg format which is what I use.

Make sure that in your waimea style file that you have the right command set otherwise you will have the ugly grey background.

P.S. If you are using XDM for your login and have that plain gray background, you can change it by editing the Xsetup_0 file. It is located int /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0

Here is an article that shows how to customize xdm
