I've noticed a peculiar thing during the use of X.org (same in XFree86). The image on the screen seems to be 'waving' or 'gulfing' a little bit. (It's really hard to explain this, I'm not a native english writer)
It only happens during the use of X, not in a text console or in wxp.

Check the built-in control panel on your monitor. Some of them have an option to change the moire, which can get rid of the wavy effect.

Also make sure that the monitor is clear of other magnetic devices (speakers, other monitors, etc.)
