|
|
Hi!
Am trying to install gentoo, but when I come to step 9 it fails.
I give the following commands:
Code: | chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update |
but the second command fails with the message "Illegal instruction".
What does the command env-update do, and why can't I execute it?

What CPU does your system have? Exactly how did you install this far (ie, from which stageX file)?
The most common reason for illegal instruction is that you are trying to execute an instruction which your processor does not recognise.

It's a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop, with an Intel 1.2GHz PIII processor. It's brand spankin' new. I have had Slackware 8.0 installed before.
My disk is partitioned correctly, and I untar the stage3 tarball to /mnt/gentoo (i.e. I follow the installation instructions _exactly_).
The reason for going with stage3 is that this is the first install, and before knowing if this is the distro to use, I don't want to spend too much time setting it up.

What is the exact filename of the stage 3 tarball you used? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Now I feel really stupid. I have the wrong tarball. I apologize for wasting your time. Problem solved.
