Owned. Your probably was not because of Gentoo at all, but because you had instructed grub to look in the wrong place for the kernel.

If he had instructed GRUB to look in the wrong place for the kernel, he would not have gotten this error. :roll:

I'm getting this error. Followed the instructions from the udev page, but no love. I actually have a /dev/null and /dev/console. Attemping other things now...

Alright, I don't get these instructions at all. Where do I run them from? Do I boot with a liveCD, chroot, then run these commands? Boot with liveCD, then run the commands without chrooting? Where do I make the test directory? Where do I issue the mknod commands? Sorry, but the instructions are vague, and as I said before, I have /dev/null and /dev/console in my chrooted environment.

So nothing I've tried has helped. The box in question stops booting with this message. All of the solutions I've read regarding the mknod solution seems to indicated that I'm getting a prompt of some sort? I think? I just don't get it. I've done scores of Gentoo installs, so I have a small clue about how it should work, but...

I get something to the effect of "Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel." And then that's it. I can only reboot.

Anybody?

<dunce cap>
I had the wrong root= line in my grub.conf. I had /dev/hda2 which is my boot partition. It needed to be /dev/hda4, my root partition. Anderon was right from the start. Ugh. Sorry, folks.
