A Ragnarok Online Linux Guide [tested on euRO & kRO]

It IS possible to play RO near perfect!

xorg runs on my box with 24bit and 1280x1024 (nvidia fx 5900)
It also works with WineX, i have tried it also with an ti4200 and xfree.

And now, here we go:

The Patcher dont work with cedega/winex

 Install RO on Windows or VMware, start the Game and update it. When you are ready to enter the World all is done there.

 Now install RO in Point2Play. From the updated Windows installation copy and overwrite all Files into your Linux installation.

 Start the Ragnarok Setup from P2P and Disable Fog (i also use Direct3d T&L)

 now take a look at my .point2play/Ragnarok\ Online/Ragnarok Online.config

Code: Select all

[AppDefaults\\Ragnarok.exe\\Wineserver]

Thats it! Graphics run very smooth (fast as in Windows), Sound without problems, only the Backspace Key is not working. Iam sure this all can be done also without p2p, but i go the p2p way.

Good Luck! ....and have phun! :)

My System:
- linux-2.6.8-gentoo-r1
- xorg 6.8.0
- Point2Play 1.3.1
- Cedega 4.0.1

Hmmm. Last time I tried to play RO with wine/winex/cedega it had problems with connecting to servers. This problem occured only in kRO sakexe 127a and those sakexes released after 127a. Client tried to connect to 50.0.0.0 instead of actual server IP. Are you using some of the newer sakexes? If that's the case I wonder if Transgaming finally added some RO support...

BTW, does it work like pre-127a sakexes? There was some serious graphic corruption, it didn't make playing impossible but quite annoying. Black blocks floating over the whole screen made me restart client every 15 minutes :/

/me installs RO :]

[edit]
OMG, W00T, IT VERKS! THANKS :)

Did you mean kRO < 127a? :?

If not, what's the trick? I had the same server IP problem as you used to have with GetCVSWineX, and I thought Point2Play was just a frontend...

No, I meant new kRO sakexe. I don't know which one does MobRO use but I guess it's newer than 127a because I got that disconnect bug with pure WineX3 and Cedega. I tought that installing and running RO via P2P would be stupid because it's just a front-end... heh, I was wrong but even now I don't know where ;) Anyway, it automagically works, yay :)

Okay, can you keep me (and anyone else who might be following this topic) updated if any nasty game-stopping glitches come up? I was about to buy a KVM and a crappy Windows computer to run RO and some other stuff, but a Transgaming subscription would be a lot cheaper and I can live without the other stuff. :D

This might be my last real motivation to buy an NVIDIA graphics card (since ATI cards aren't supported by Cedega yet.)

If I do, I guess you'll be hearing if oRO works just as well.

/rant/
I simply cannot understand why people would want to play this game?!
it has graphics only suitable for a kiddie game, the sound effects sounds like something you would hear in a bad cartoon saturday morning. The charecters and monsters ingame are sprites and not fully rendered, which they should be in a 3d engine game with 380 degree zoom, there are also so many better games which also work in linux and got better graphics than this. (UO, EQ, WOW, Lineage II, COH" not to mention all those good free games in portage.
/rant over/
thats my opinion anyway 8)
Finally, in conclusion, I shall say only this

Yeah, RO is a pretty bad game but it's addicting. I would gladly start playing some other game if I could resist RO for more than 2 months... Fortunately, since I discovered Stepmania I'm not wasting my time in some poor MMO game that much :]

3D models are all well and good until you reach the sort of densities you can reach in games like RO. I've seen far more people in one place at the same time in this as I have ever seen in any other game. Now imagine what 200-500 people with 20,000 polygons each, and a swarm of 200 sieging monsters, would do to the kind of graphics card the game supports (i.e. TNT2 and above.) No thanks. :-)

And Everquest? What the hell? It sucks in all the same ways as RO does. Not to mention that it doesn't work on Linux any better than RO does (i.e., both require Cedega, whereas both should have been ported.)

there has been alot of grphical improvements on eq and though they certainly can not keep up with games like Lineage II or EQ2, they can keep up with World Of Warcraft though, and atleast we have EQEMU native in linux also supporting the latest live EQ client. I did not say any of those games ran better and or equal to RO, nor did i say
they ran as good as native games ;) i assumed people knew all the games i wrote require either wine or cedega....with regards to the siege, since i have not played RO for more than 15 min because that was how long i could stand it :p i have not experienced such a siege, but your properly right.
Finally, in conclusion, I shall say only this

It's pretty amusing that you can stand Everquest. I got bored of that one before my free trial expired. :-)

But as far as the graphics, it's a basic issue like Doom 2 vs. Doom 3. In Doom 2, you had frequent occurrences where you walked into a room and 50-100 shotgunners popped out and kicked your arse. In Doom 3, you see probably a maximum of 4-6 undead marines in one scene... all because they're using so many polygons now.

In the case of Doom 3 it's partially forgivable because it would be bad if it were sprites. But in the case of RO where the goals are only to emulate the console style of RPG in a PC setting, I think they work pretty well.

And certainly, anyone who thinks the graphics are "kiddie" is probably the same sort of person who thinks the GameBoy and GameCube are only for kids.

The main problems with RO are...
  • Economy. A special arrow costs three times the price of a normal arrow, but never does anywhere like three times the damage.
  • Management. Idiots still killsteal, and you report them, and the GMs don't do shit. Well, sometimes they do, but often they don't.
  • Lag. The game uses TCP for its networking, so it gets lag spikes, which could have been fairly easily avoided.
  • Grammar. If you played it for 15 minutes, that was probably long enough to discover this one.
  • Quests. There just aren't enough, although it has improved a lot since the last time I was there.
Because of the lag, I don't think I would be playing if they hadn't set up a local server here. When they moved the servers from S.Korea to the US there was much more lag from here (Australia)... but now there is a server in Sydney so it's not quite so bad. Lag spikes still own players occasionally, though, since it's still TCP.

The main motivation for starting again was for free stuff... but actually, the game is damn good if you have friends who you can rely on to be online at the same time, especially when they're housemates. It's much more social than shitty EQ... I consider RO to be more of a competitor for IRC than a competitor to EQ, though.

(using wine) I am getting a segfault whenever I try to run and patch teh app. I think it is because of the IE activex control required to display teh patch screen. Is there a workaround?

Any of you having problems, use Wine to run it.

It's not a game I have, but it seems to work fine in Wine, rather than Cedega:

Hello

I've tried installing and running Ragnarok on my laptop and desktop without success. The install works just fine, and so does the updating. But when I try to run the game, it comes up with a bunch of errors, and the game crashes in the wine window.

Here's the output from wine:

Code: Select all
