Installing XFree86 from cvs, now what?

All,

I'm sure this has been answered before. I have tried the search feature but it turned up 8237 hits and I'm NOT going to read through all of them.

This is what I'm doing:

1. Got the cvs source on my home machine and burned it to CD, installed it at work

2. Compiled and installed it on my new box

Now to the big problem. How to get Portage to recognise the installation.
I guess this command may help, but I'm not sure what the argument should be:
emerge inject XYZ

What should I put in XYZ? xfree-4.2.99 or xfree-4.2.1 or something else?
