Code:
/root/.thunderbird/default/2473gjuj.slt/compreg.dat

Is the bomb. I also removed:
Code:
root/.mozilla/firefox/default.q1y/compreg.dat

and now the embedded html links within emails bring up ffox browser without asking to create a new profile (irregardless of how many sessions of FFox you may already have open on the desktop).

And how to make Ctrl-M in Firefox to open 'New Mail' again?

It has been working with Thunderbird 0.7.3 and Firefox 0.9.3, but now it works only in Thunderbird and Firefox refuses to do anything after Ctrl-M.

/me is mildly curious what little blue bird told the original suggester about that file...

Great, it worked for me as well.
How does one come to know such things like deleting that file would make it all work again?

Add another success story. Perhaps a bug should be posted about this to the thunderbird team?

Me too!
I was ipgrading from mozilla-thunderbird-0.73 straight through to mozilla-thunderbird-1.0, having the same symtoms of lost mails.
Deleting compreg.dat was the solution.
